What is Baklava made of?

The sweet and flaky layers of baklava is one of the best tastes in the world – well, at least according to us. What is baklava made of so we’d love to get some right now so that you can try them yourself, but we also know it’s important to know what you are eating.

Before we get into the details, it’s important to note that if you have allergies to tree nuts, baklava is not for you. We use pistachios and walnuts in our recipes, just like most baklava recipes. Other than that, the ingredients are simple, making it a great dessert to serve.

Baklava Ingredients

Filo dough

The flaky filo dough, also spelled ‘phyllo’, is a thin, unleavened pastry dough that can be difficult to work with if you’re not used to it. There are premade slices of filo dough if you are not familiar with unleavened dough.

Unleavened means that there is no yeast in the dough. Without the yeast, the bread is more flaky and does not rise like other bread recipes. The dough is flattened into thin squares or rectangles. The filo is the bottom layer and the top layer in most recipes, and sometimes, there is a layer or two of filo in the middle.

Depending on the recipe, the nuts in baklava vary. At Holy Land Brand, the main nuts we use include walnuts and pistachios. Other recipes can include cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, and others in theirs, but the most common are walnuts. As we mentioned earlier, please avoid baklava if you have tree nut allergies.

When chopping up the nuts, some recipes include various seasonings to add flavor and depth to the baklava. The most common ones are cinnamon and cloves. If you decide to make baklava for yourself, make sure to use the seasonings in your honey or syrup if you make your own. Consistent flavor is what ties the baklava together.

Honey or Syrup

Speaking of seasoning in the honey or syrup, baklava will also need the sticky substance to hold together the layers and add the sweet flavors that turns layered thin bread and nuts into a tasty treat.

We use honey because the sweet, natural flavors can’t be beat. Adding seasonings to the honey and syrup depends on the recipe, so find one you like and follow those instructions.

Other Ingredients

If you make it from scratch, you’ll need the standard baking ingredients like butter, salt, and sugar. If you decide to make it on your own, make sure to look up an authentic recipe. Baklava originally comes from the Mediterranean with many recipes coming from Greece and Lebanon. Check out the differences between baklava and baklawa to learn more.
